US Sees Record High in Student Visa Denials

Last year, the US rejected over 250,000 student visa applications, marking the highest rate in 20 years, with about 36% of all applications denied. Despite issuing more than 445,000 student visas, an increase of about 34,000 from the previous year, the number of denials also rose by 30,000.

The denial rate for student visas in 2023 was 36.3%, the highest since 2013 and more than double the rate in 2014. Students from India faced the most rejections, accounting for roughly 29% of total denials.

David J. Bier from The Cato Institute mentioned that many denials are due to a failure to demonstrate “nonimmigrant intent,” indicating a desire not to permanently move to the US.
