A U.S. citizen has been sentenced to a two-year jail term by a local court for attempting to enter India using counterfeit visa documents, according to a senior official on Saturday. ASP Atish Kumar Singh stated that the court has additionally levied a fine of Rs 20,000 on the individual.

In Maharajganj, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Saurabh Srivastava, delivered the verdict on Friday, sentencing Eric Daniel Beckwith (36) to a two-year imprisonment term. The court specified that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional 15 days of imprisonment. The ASP noted that the U.S. national was traveling to India from Nepal when the Immigration Department discovered the fraudulent documents during the verification process.
