The U.S. government is taking steps to prevent misuse of the H-1B visa lottery system by employers. A new rule from the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is designed to curb the practice of submitting multiple registrations for the same individual, emphasizing a “candidate-first” approach. This means that a foreign worker’s chances of winning the lottery won’t be influenced by the number of employers trying their luck.

Starting March 6th, 2024, employers will be limited to one H-1B registration per foreign national for the 2025 fiscal year. The rule, effective within 30 days of publication, aims to address concerns about employers overwhelming the system with duplicate applications, thereby improving the chances for others.

According to Forbes, employers are supportive of this change, viewing it as a step toward a fairer system where everyone has an equal opportunity, regardless of their employer’s strategies.
