UK Student Visa Policy Changes on International Students

The UK has changed its student visa rules for postgraduate research programs. Starting January 2024, international students in these programs can’t bring their family, except for those in Master of Research (MRes) and Doctorate programs.

According to Rittika Chanda Parruck from the British Council, these changes won’t have a big impact. Most postgraduate programs are short, about a year, so the effect is not as much as in other countries. The changes only affect some international students, with exceptions for certain categories.

Importantly, these changes don’t affect other visa options like the Graduate Route, Young Professionals Scheme, visit visas, or Skilled Work visas. Undergraduate students can still bring their family as before.

Despite these changes, the UK is still a good choice for international students because of its top universities. More Indian students are going there, with 133,237 study visas in 2023, showing that it’s still a popular place to study.
