The UK has raised the minimum salary requirements for overseas workers, including those from India, applying for Skilled Worker visas. These changes, effective from Thursday, are part of efforts to reduce overall migration.
Under the Skilled Worker visa category, the minimum salary threshold has increased from GBP 26,200 to GBP 38,700, representing a 48% increase. This move aims to prevent foreign workers from undercutting local wages and limit entry for about 300,000 individuals who arrived in the UK last year.
UK Home Secretary James Cleverly highlighted the need to control the influx of low-cost foreign labor, calling mass migration unsustainable and unfair as it drives down wages for hardworking individuals. The government is focusing on attracting skilled workers that match the country’s economic needs while reducing overall migration numbers.
Cleverly also mentioned an upcoming raise in the minimum income requirement for dependents on Family Visas, starting from GBP 18,600 to GBP 29,000 on April 11. This aligns with the Skilled Worker visa threshold to ensure adequate financial support for family members brought to the UK.
