The UK is letting Ukrainians stay longer by extending visas for an extra 18 months due to the conflict with Russia.

Starting in early 2025, Ukrainians in the UK under the Ukraine visa schemes can apply for this extension, securing their rights to work, receive benefits, access healthcare, and pursue education. Those who came on the initial visas can now stay until September 2026.

UK Minister Tom Pursglove said, “This new visa extension provides certainty for Ukrainians in the UK during this ongoing conflict, and we’re committed to offering a safe haven for those escaping it.”

After the Russia-Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022, the UK introduced three schemes โ€“ Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Family Scheme, and Ukraine Extension Scheme โ€“ granting visa holders three years’ leave. The original visas were set to expire in March 2025.

The 18-month extension aligns with the UK’s long-term commitment to Ukraine, marking nearly two years since Russia’s invasion. The UK and its allies stand in solidarity with Ukraine, condemning Russian President Putin’s actions.

Since the launch of the Ukraine schemes, over 283,000 Ukrainians have sought refuge in the UK. The extension allows Ukrainians to apply in the last three months of their existing visa. Various schemes, including Ukraine Family and Sponsorship, aid family reunification and assist Ukrainians in the UK.

Eduard Fesko, from Ukraine’s Embassy in the UK, expressed gratitude for the UK’s support to temporarily displaced Ukrainians. The extension underscores the ongoing commitment to help those affected by the conflict.
