The UK government is being accused of hiding details about Golden Visas given to Russian oligarchs. The program, allowing wealthy foreigners to get residency, was closed in February 2022 due to concerns after Russia’s Ukraine invasion. Despite summarizing findings in January, the government won’t release the full review started in 2018.

Campaigner Bill Browder and Liberal Democratic spokesperson Layla Moran criticize the government, calling it inappropriate and a potential cover-up. In January 2023, Home Secretary Suella Braverman confirmed ten oligarchs benefited, leading to the program’s end. While praised, there’s criticism for not providing details on those at risk of crime or corruption.

A 2022 report revealed 200+ wealthy Russians got UK residency through the program from 2015 to 2022. The UK’s Residency by Investment Program, started in 1994 and rebranded as Tier 1 Investor Visa in 2008, aimed to attract global investors.
