UAE Tops Gulf Nations in Easy Tourist Visas

The UAE has emerged as the leader among Gulf nations in providing easy access to tourist visas, as highlighted by the 2023 Global Tourist Visa Openness Index from the United Nations Tourism Organization. Scoring 67.80 points, the UAE’s visa process stands out for its accessibility, closely followed by other Gulf countries like Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. In contrast, Kuwait lags behind with a significantly lower score of 12.96 points, reflecting the least accessible tourist visa system in the region.

The index employs a scale of 0 to 100 to evaluate visa ease, with higher scores indicating a smoother visa acquisition process. This data reveals a positive trend in the Middle East towards simplifying visa regulations. Over the years, there has been a notable decrease in the demand for traditional visas, dropping from 71% in 2015 to 57% in 2023. Concurrently, the availability of electronic visas has increased from 10% to 15%, while visas on arrival have risen from 17% to 24% during the same period.

Moreover, there has been a remarkable growth in mutual visa exemptions among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, soaring from a mere 2% in 2018 to a substantial 87% in 2023. This significant increase further signifies the region’s commitment to promoting tourism and enhancing travel convenience for visitors. It’s essential to note that the report’s analysis specifically focuses on visa policies that impact temporary visitors (tourists) holding ordinary passports, providing valuable insights into the evolving landscape of visa facilitation in the Gulf region.
