The U.S. is making it faster for Indians to get visa appointments, shared the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs. In 2023, the U.S. Embassy in India handled 1.4 million visas, cutting wait times by 75% for most categories. However, first-time U.S. tourist visas (B-1/B-2) still have delays.

Assistant Secretary Rena Bitter mentioned, “For most categories, there’s no wait time at all, except for first-time tourists to the United States.”

Even though more students are applying, wait times for F-1 student visas improved in 2023. The U.S. Embassy in India plays a big role, with one in four international students in the U.S. being from India.

Bitter also stressed the importance of helping Indian workers on H-1B status. The State Department’s new H-1B visa renewal pilot program aims to make the immigration process smoother and reduce wait times for many Indian workers in the U.S.
