Thailand is working on a plan to make it simpler for wealthy tourists to travel. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is pushing for a joint visa program with countries that hosted 70 million tourists last year.
Srettha’s idea is to create a visa like the Schengen one that lets people move easily between Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Most leaders seem to like this visa plan, and Thailand hopes it will bring in more money from each tourist. This move is to help Thailand’s economy deal with problems like slow exports and weak demand for its goods.
In 2023, these six Southeast Asian countries had 70 million foreign tourists, and Thailand and Malaysia made about $48 billion from tourism combined.
