Taliban Urges India to Simplify Visas for Afghans

The Taliban has asked India to make it easier for Afghan businessmen, patients, and students to get visas. India’s representative for Afghanistan, J.P. Singh, talked with the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, about this. Muttaqi said it’s important for India to simplify visa processes for Afghans looking for business, medical treatment, or education opportunities.

The discussions, likely held in Kabul, also covered security, trade, and ways to fight drug issues, according to a statement from Afghanistan. Singh showed India’s interest in boosting economic ties with Afghanistan and increasing trade through the Chabahar port.

India hasn’t officially recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan but wants a government in Kabul that includes everyone. India also wants to make sure Afghan soil isn’t used for terrorism. India is pushing for humanitarian aid to reach Afghanistan quickly.

In June 2022, India sent a “technical team” to its embassy in Kabul after withdrawing officials in August 2021 due to safety concerns. J.P. Singh, who heads the Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran division of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), led the talks.
