Sri Lanka has decided to end long-stay visas for Russians and Ukrainians following criticism of an alleged “whites only” policy, which raised concerns about Russian-operated businesses engaging in illicit activities. Officials have instructed thousands of Russians and Ukrainians with expired extended visas to leave the country within two weeks starting from February 23. The move comes after complaints about overstaying, establishment of businesses like restaurants and nightclubs, and the alleged use of non-local payment methods by these visitors.

While the Tourism Ministry received grievances, President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office has called for an investigation into the decision, stating that there is no official government decision to revoke visa extensions for Ukrainian and Russian tourists. Sri Lanka had previously introduced measures like 30-day visa-on-arrival and extensions up to six months to boost the tourism sector amid economic challenges. The decision to end visas for Russians and Ukrainians is seen as an attempt to address concerns and regulate the activities of certain individuals in the country.
