Russia has introduced an electronic visa (e-visa) facility for Indian travelers, effective from August 1. This move aims to simplify the visa acquisition process for tourists visiting Russia, eliminating the need for physical visits to consulates or embassies. The e-visa, which is also available to travelers from 54 other countries, offers a more convenient option for those wishing to explore Russia.

E-Visa Validity and Stay Duration: The newly introduced e-visa for Russia is valid for a duration of 60 days, counted from the date of issue. Holders of this e-visa are permitted to stay within the borders of Russia for a maximum of 16 days.

Key Points for E-Visa Application: Applying for the e-visa involves adhering to specific guidelines and regulations, which are outlined below:

  1. Application Timing: Prospective travelers need to submit their e-visa application on the official website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The application should be completed no earlier than 40 days before the intended trip and no later than four days prior to the planned departure.
  2. Validity and Stay Duration: Once issued, the e-visa remains valid for a period of 60 days. Within this time frame, visitors are allowed to spend up to 16 days within Russia.
  3. Application Requirements: Applicants are required to provide a digital photograph of themselves and a scanned copy of the passport’s information page as part of the application process.
  4. Travel Purposes: The e-visa permits travel for various purposes, including leisure (tourism), business trips, guest visits, as well as participation in scientific, cultural, socio-political, economic, and sports events.
  5. Extension Process: If a traveler wishes to extend their stay beyond the initial 16 days granted by the e-visa, the extension process will be handled by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation or its affiliated regional offices. If the foreign citizen has registered their migration details at the place of stay, the extension will be processed there. If not, an ordinary (non-electronic) visa will be issued for the extended stay.

Simplifying Travel to Russia: The introduction of the e-visa facility for Indian travelers to Russia aims to streamline the visa application process and make it more accessible. By allowing visitors to apply online without the need for consular visits, Russia aims to encourage more tourists, businesspeople, and participants in various events to visit the country.
