Romania is ready to go to court if Austria continues to block its entry into the Schengen Zone, a group of 27 European countries where border controls are not enforced. Romania has met all the technical requirements for Schengen Zone membership for over a decade, but Austria has vetoed its inclusion, arguing that the Schengen system needs to improve before expanding.

Marcel Ciolacu, Romania’s Prime Minister, considers Austria’s veto unjust and is prepared to take legal action if Austria maintains its opposition. The decision on Romania’s Schengen Zone membership will be revisited at the December meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council.

Germany supports Romania’s bid for Schengen Zone membership, viewing it as a significant issue. The Bulgarian Minister of Internal Affairs, Kalin Stoianov, is also optimistic that Romania and Bulgaria will be granted access to the Schengen Zone in December.
