Oman has stopped issuing visas to Bangladeshis. This is a new rule that started on October 31, 2023.
Oman is a popular country for Bangladeshi workers to go to. Over the past 43 years, about 1.8 million Bangladeshis have moved to Oman to work. There are about 800,000 Bangladeshis living in Oman today.
Oman says that it stopped issuing visas to Bangladeshis because there are too many foreign workers in the country. The Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) says that this is a big setback for Bangladeshi workers.
BAIRA is worried that this will make it harder for Bangladeshi workers to find jobs in the Middle East.
Oman has not given a specific reason for stopping issuing visas to Bangladeshis. But the Royal Oman Police has said that it is cracking down on people who work in Oman on tourist or travel visas.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Oman has asked Bangladeshis who are currently working in Oman to submit all of their important documents for verification by November 15.
