New Zealand’s immigration is ready for more people applying for permanent residence. After giving fast-track residence to over 200,000 migrants two years ago, they’re now applying for permanent settlement.

In the last two weeks, over 3,500 people applied for permanent resident visas online. Some had issues, like error messages on the first day, but these got fixed after about a week.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) got only six requests for “alternative options” from people having trouble with online submissions. Katy MacLeod, INZ’s Director of Online Services, said, “We’re confident the online system can handle more applications,” and they’re keeping an eye on its performance.

For migrants, getting permanent residence is an important step towards citizenship and freedom from travel restrictions. Some feel stuck in New Zealand because travel restrictions affect work trips lasting more than 10 days.
