Immigration New Zealand is looking into the mistreatment of migrant workers.
Immigration New Zealand is investigating a situation where more than 30 migrant workers, who arrived on accredited employment work visas, are now stranded in Auckland. These workers paid large sums, between $15,000 and $40,000, to agents for their visas and promised jobs but were left without employment.
The investigation has expanded to include four additional properties in Auckland housing more jobless workers. Immigration officials have interviewed 115 Indian and Bangladeshi nationals who entered New Zealand with these visas. They have also found that the living conditions in these properties were not suitable for so many people.
Immigration New Zealand’s primary concern is the well-being of these individuals, ensuring they have access to necessities like food, water, and electricity. They are also connecting them with local agencies for support. Following allegations of abuse, the accredited employer work visa scheme’s processes are under review.
