New Zealand has changed its work visa rules to make it easier for foreign workers to protect themselves from exploitation.

Foreign workers who report exploitation can now apply for a Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa (MEPV). This visa allows them to leave their current job and work for any other employer in New Zealand while their exploitation claim is being investigated.

Foreign workers who are already on an MEPV can now apply for a further MEPV if they are having trouble finding a new job. This will allow them to stay in New Zealand for up to 12 months longer.

The new rules also give MEPV applications high priority, so that they are processed quickly.

These changes are a positive step for New Zealand, as they will help to protect foreign workers from exploitation and ensure that they have access to support and assistance.
