New Zealand Considers Digital Nomad Visa

New Zealand is contemplating introducing a dedicated visa for digital nomads, following the lead of several other nations that have implemented similar initiatives. Erica Stanford, the Immigration Minister, confirmed that this idea is under consideration but clarified that it’s not the immediate priority and will require time for a final decision.

Currently, digital nomads interested in working from New Zealand can opt for a Working Holiday Visa or a Visitor Visa. However, these visas are not tailored specifically for digital nomads, leading to anticipation for a specialized visa designed to meet their needs more effectively.

While there isn’t a set timeline for the introduction of this new visa, it is likely to be pursued once the government completes its updates to immigration regulations. Before the recent election, the National Party proposed the issuance of around 250 visas initially for digital nomads, enabling them to reside and work in New Zealand for up to a year. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding tax policies related to this prospective digital nomad visa, as noted by Revenue Minister Simon Watts.
