New Visa Rule Could Affect Canadian Tourism

Canada now requires visas for Mexican travelers, worrying Canadian tourism businesses. Mexico is an important market for Canadian tourism, and this change could hurt the industry, especially with pandemic-related travel restrictions.

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) is concerned about fewer visitors coming because of this visa requirement. In the past, when Mexicans needed visas to visit Canada, fewer people came.

The Canadian government made this rule because of more asylum claims from Mexico. Starting February 29, Mexicans must get an electronic travel authorization (ETA) if they have a valid U.S. visa or a Canadian visa from the last ten years and are flying to Canada.

If they don’t meet these conditions, they’ll need a Canadian visitor visa, says Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

But IRCC says most Mexicans won’t be affected because many already have U.S. visas, letting them visit Canada without needing a visa.
