Japan is introducing a new visa for digital nomads, those who work and travel remotely. Starting at the end of March, the program provides a six-month visa for individuals earning at least ยฅ10 million annually. It aims to attract digital nomads from 49 countries, including the US, Australia, and Singapore, with tax treaties and short-term visa exemptions.

The six-month duration is based on a survey showing digital nomads prefer longer stays than the current 90-day limit for visa-free visits. This visa allows remote work from anywhere in Japan and is open to self-employed individuals. Applicants need private health insurance and can bring family members. However, it doesn’t provide a residence card, limiting access to some government benefits. It’s non-renewable, requiring a six-month wait outside Japan before reapplying.

This move aligns with the global trend recognizing the economic contributions of the digital nomad community, which exceeds 35 million worldwide. Japan joins over 50 countries offering similar visas, each with different durations.
