A 32-year-old man from Piliyandala was arrested at Katunayake Airport on August 23 for trying to use a fake Canadian visa to travel to Canada.

The man had presented the visa at the SriLankan Airlines counter, but airline staff became suspicious and alerted the authorities. The man was then taken to the Immigration and Border Checking Unit for investigation.

Technological assessments confirmed that the visa was fake. The man told investigators that he had paid a broker Rs. 4.5 million for the visa.

The Canadian Embassy’s airport liaison officer also verified that the visa was fake.

The man has been arrested and is being held at the Katunayake Airport Criminal Investigation Department for further questioning.
