The Maldives has expelled 186 foreigners, including 43 Indians, over visa violations and drug offenses. Bangladesh had the highest number at 83 deportees, followed by 43 Indians, 25 Sri Lankans, and eight Nepalis.

The deportation details are undisclosed, part of the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal businesses. Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan mentioned collaborative actions with the Economic Ministry to address such businesses.

The Home Ministry is actively working to close down businesses involving foreigners instead of the registered owner.

Immigration Controller Shamaan Waheed reported the deportation of 186 foreigners engaged in criminal activities. Raids conducted by immigration and police target foreign workers with criminal offenses, detaining and deporting those with valid documents and passports.

Tensions between India and the Maldives heightened after the November elections, with strained relations due to the ‘India Out’ campaign. President Muizzu called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, leading to a boycott by Indian tourists after derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
