Japan is thinking about a new visa for digital nomads, so people can stay in the country for longer than the usual three months. Other countries already have similar visas (about 46 of them). This kind of visa allows folks to live in one country while working for someone in another.

These visas usually last one to two years, and the tax rules are different in each country. Some places make digital nomads pay regular taxes, while others give them tax breaks or even let them skip income tax.

Digital nomad visas became popular during the pandemic when travel restrictions made tourism tough. They’ve stayed popular because they let digital nomads stick around and help out local economies.

Now, Japan wants to join in and is thinking about creating its own digital nomad visa. The idea is to keep the tourism excitement going, get people to stay longer, spend more money, and share good experiences to attract even more visitors.

Imaeda Soichiro, Deputy Minister at Japan’s Ministry of Education, Sports, Culture & Science (MEXT), shared some basic details about the idea on X (used to be Twitter).
