Japan, known for its work-friendly policies and affordability, is now opening its doors to digital nomads. The Japanese government plans to launch a six-month visa for digital nomads starting in March 2024.

Since reopening to international visitors in October 2022, Japan has seen more tourists, with over 2 million monthly visitors in 2023, compared to 140,000 in 2022. The weak yen has affected Japan’s economy, and a boost in tourism is expected to aid in its recovery.

Historically, staying long-term in Japan was challenging for foreigners, with options limited to a 90-day tourist visa (without work permission for Americans) or a working holiday visa (not available to U.S. citizens). The new six-month visa now provides a simpler option for those wanting an extended stay in Japan.
