Japan is making it simpler for foreign students to stay and work after finishing their studies. Now, students from state-designated technical schools can work in fields not directly related to their majors. This change is expected to allow around 3,000 more students to stay and work in Japan each year.

Previously, many students had to leave because they couldn’t find jobs aligned with their skills. State-designated technical schools will offer special programs, including practical training at companies, to enhance students’ skills. The government also expanded eligibility for the “designated activities” visa, allowing students with good Japanese skills and educational achievements equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, like completing a four-year program at a technical school.

A survey found that about 75% of foreign students in technical schools want to work in Japan. These changes aim to make it easier for foreign students to find jobs in Japan and contribute their skills to the country’s workforce.
