Japan Expands Visa Program for Foreign

Japan has broadened its visa program to include skilled foreign workers in driving and railway roles, aiming to fill shortages and allow longer stays of up to five years. The Specified Skilled Worker No. 1 visa now covers four additional industries, reflecting Japan’s need for foreign labor due to declining births and increased demand in transportation.

The government plans to accept over 820,000 skilled foreigners in the next five years, double the previous estimate, with updated rules to facilitate hiring. Skilled foreigners can work in road transportation as drivers, requiring Japanese proficiency. In railways, roles include manufacturing, maintenance, driving, and station duties.

The No. 1 visa requires professional skills and Japanese proficiency, offering longer stays and pathways to permanent residency. This change also replaces the foreign trainee program, emphasizing skill development and worker rights.
