India has formally requested the US to simplify and make permanent the process of renewing H-1B visas, particularly benefiting visa holders, including business school graduates in the tech sector.

The H-1B visa allows international students to work in the US for three years post their higher education, with an option for an additional three years. Since January 29, 2024, the US State Department has been testing a program allowing domestic visa renewal for up to 20,000 principal H-1B visa holders, excluding H-4 visa family members.

During a recent India-US Trade Policy Forum in New Delhi, Indian officials urged the US to make this change permanent and include H-1B visa holders’ family members in the program.

These requests align with broader updates to the H-1B process, including integrity measures and streamlined eligibility requirements, impacting international students aspiring to stay in the US after graduation.
