India clarified that the notice to a French journalist in Delhi was due to breaking visa rules, not the nature of her journalism. During talks with the French delegation in New Delhi, part of President Emmanuel Macron’s visit, India shared this information.

French journalist Vanessa Dougnac received a notice for alleged visa rule violations, with a response due by February 2.

In a briefing on Macron’s talks with PM Modi, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted that France appreciated India’s focus on rule compliance.

Around 30 foreign correspondents in India expressed “deep concern” in an open letter, emphasizing Dougnac’s long stay, her role as a senior journalist, and her cooperation with authorities.

They urged a quick resolution, noting its impact on her life and family, and requested support for a free press in line with India’s democratic traditions.
