Tensions between India and Canada have resulted in an 86% decrease in the issuance of study permits to Indian students during the last quarter of 2023, as reported by Reuters. The decline is attributed to India’s decision, made in October 2023, to request 41 Canadian diplomats to depart from the country. India clarified that this move aimed at aligning diplomatic presence with Canada in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
According to Canada’s immigration minister, Marc Miller, the reduction in the number of study permits granted to Indian students occurred in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the preceding quarter. This decline followed India’s directive for Canadian diplomats responsible for processing the permits to leave the country.
