Indian students pursuing their Master’s studies in France have reason to celebrate as they will now be granted a five-year post-study visa, allowing them to stay in the country for an extended period. The decision was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the Indian Community in Paris last week.
Initially, during the Prime Minister’s last visit to France, it was decided that Indian students would receive a two-year post-study work visa. However, after further consideration, the authorities have now extended this visa to five years for those completing their Master’s studies in France.
This decision has been well-received by experts and stakeholders. Sayantan Biswas, the co-founder of UniAco, praised the move, stating that it broadens options for Indian students planning to study abroad and acknowledges India’s outstanding youth while fostering cross-cultural collaboration. Akshay Chaturvedi, CEO of LeverageEdu & Fly, also welcomed the decision, considering it a potential game-changer for France and predicting an increased number of Indian students choosing France as their study destination in the coming academic years.
The post-study visa for Master’s graduates in France allows its holders to continue residing and working in the country. During this visa period, Indian students who have completed their Master’s studies will have the opportunity to find employment. After the permitted period ends, individuals who are unable to find a job and have not had their visa extended will be required to leave France.
Data from 2019 indicates that approximately 10,000 Indian students chose France as their study destination. While the interest remained high in the following years, the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions impacted the number of students pursuing studies abroad.
Overall, this new five-year post-study visa is expected to attract more Indian students to France, promoting academic exchanges and contributing to a globally linked future.
