Ghana is being investigated for its role in a large-scale visa fraud scheme involving South Africa’s immigration system and foreign missions.
South African authorities have uncovered thousands of cases of fraudulent visas and permits being issued, both in South Africa and abroad, including in Ghana.
One South African diplomat in Ghana has been suspended, and two others in China are also facing suspension.
The investigation, which is ongoing, has found that foreign missions have been issuing fraudulent visas, including retirement visas to people as young as 25.
More than 45,000 fraudulent visas were issued between 2014 and June 2021, including permanent residence permits, business visas, and work permits.
An investigation team was set up to review all permits issued since 2004, the year South Africa’s immigration laws were changed.
