Germany now lets international students work part-time while studying, up to 20 hours per week. They can start working nine months before their courses begin and continue for two years after graduation. They can also take language classes during this time.
Before, students could come early but couldn’t work.
Applicants for apprenticeships can also work part-time before and after their training. They need basic German skills (B1 level) and must be under 35 years old. During the nine-month period, they can work up to 20 hours per week.
Graduates from German universities can stay for up to 18 months after graduation to find a job and can apply for permanent residency after two years of working in Germany.
Students switching careers after graduation need to update their visa to an EU Blue Card or German Skilled Worker Visa.
As of December 2023, Germany had over 770,000 job openings in various fields like horticulture, metalworking, woodworking, healthcare, sales, aviation, and law.
