Germany Eases Visa Rules for Students Working While Studying

Germany has introduced new rules for international students under its skilled worker law, effective from March 1, 2024. Here are the key points simplified for easy understanding:

  1. Work Before Studying: Non-EU citizens can now come to Germany for up to nine months with a “Visum zur Studienbewerbung” (visa for study applications). During this time, they can work up to 20 hours per week to support themselves while preparing their university applications.
  2. Apprenticeship Applicants: Those interested in apprenticeships can stay in Germany for nine months, search for opportunities, and work part-time during this period. They can also continue working for 20 hours per week alongside their training once they secure an apprenticeship.
  3. Increased Working Hours: International students can now work for 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year, up from the previous limit of 120 full days, making it easier to manage living expenses while studying.
  4. Flexibility for Graduates: Graduates from German universities can change career paths more easily under the new rules. They can apply for an EU Blue Card or German Skilled Worker Visa if they have a degree or vocational qualification along with two years of relevant work experience, even if it’s in a different field from their studies.

These changes aim to attract more skilled workers and provide greater opportunities for international students and graduates in Germany.
