France Plans to Establish Embassy in Guyana and Provide Schengen Visa

In 2025, France plans to open its embassy in Guyana, marking a significant step as the first EU nation to provide visa services in the region.

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announced that the embassy will be located in Georgetown, the capital city. While the exact opening month wasn’t specified, this move aims to strengthen bilateral relations and promote cooperation, especially in areas where French expertise is valuable to Guyana.

Once the French Embassy is operational in Guyana, the process of obtaining a Schengen visa will become more accessible for Guyanese citizens. Currently, they have to travel to Suriname for visa procedures, but this requirement will be eliminated with the embassy’s presence.

Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugh Hilton Todd, welcomed this decision, noting its positive impact on facilitating Schengen visas for Guyanese individuals and the ongoing efforts to streamline visa processes with Schengen countries.
