Piotr Wawrzyk, former deputy foreign minister of Poland, has been arrested in a cash-for-visas scandal confirmed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA). Wawrzyk, who served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from January 2021 to August 2023, faces charges of expediting work visa processing for money.

The CBA alleges Wawrzyk exceeded his authority, violating visa procedures and engaging in intermediation. The ongoing investigation has resulted in charges against nine individuals.

The scandal, exposed in August, revealed alleged bribery for work visas for individuals from third countries seeking entry into Poland. Initial claims by opposition parties stated 350,000 visas were issued for money, but the reported number is now around 250,000.
