EU institutions are moving to streamline administrative procedures for work and residence visas, aiming to facilitate the process for third-country nationals seeking employment and residency in the EU.
During the Strasbourg plenary session, the European Parliament confirmed the provisional agreement reached by EU institutions in December 2023. Now, it awaits formal approval by EU ministers before the end of the current legislative term, which concludes with the EU elections in early June.
This legislative initiative falls under the umbrella of ‘legal migration’, aiming to address labor market shortages in the EU by attracting migrant workers.
This initiative stands in contrast to the EU migration pact, a series of legislative proposals expected to be adopted in the coming weeks, which aims to reduce the influx of migrants arriving at EU borders seeking international protection.
