On November 13, 2023, the European Council approved new rules to simplify the process of obtaining a Schengen visa. This move aligns with the European Commission’s goal to fully digitize the Schengen visa process by 2025.

The Schengen area, consisting of 27 European countries, is renowned for its free travel zone with no internal border controls. The Schengen visa allows short stays and unrestricted travel within these countries. The approved regulations establish an online EU visa application platform, where applicants can submit information, upload documents, and pay fees. This platform eliminates the need to apply in person at embassies or consulates, making the process more efficient.

The new system is set to become the primary method for most Schengen visa applications, with in-person visits required only for first-time applicants, those with expired biometric data, and individuals with new travel documents. For those visiting multiple Schengen countries, the platform will automatically assign the responsible country based on the planned duration of stay, though applicants can request a specific member state if needed. This initiative aims to enhance both the convenience and security of the Schengen visa application process.
