Starting January 1, 2024, international students aiming to study in Canada must show double the funds in their bank accounts, amounting to $20,635, alongside covering tuition and travel expenses for the first year. Visa restrictions may be imposed if educational institutions don’t provide sufficient support, addressing concerns about exploitation.

Canada’s government extended uncapped work rights until April 30, 2024, allowing students to work over 20 hours per week. While a permanent increase to 30 hours is under consideration, full-time work won’t be permitted permanently, as per Minister Marc Miller.

These changes combat concerns about “bad actors” in international education, including fraud prevention measures. Institutions must ensure suitable housing due to Canada’s housing crisis. The minister emphasized health and academic support, warning of potential visa limits if issues persist by September 2024. Provinces and territories are urged to regulate institutions effectively, including possible closures.
