Canada has introduced new regulations for international students, featuring an online portal for Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) to verify letters of acceptance (LOAs) submitted by students. DLIs must authenticate LOAs within 10 days; failure results in visa application cancellation with fee refunds, addressing past misuse cases.
Starting December 1, 2023, a new study permit application form (IMM1294) is mandatory for IRCC secure account users. A proposed “Trusted Institutions Framework” for study permits, offering benefits like faster processing, is anticipated in fall 2024.
Further 2024 changes include higher cost-of-living requirements, reconsideration of the 20-hour work cap, ending facilitative measures for counting time spent abroad towards the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and introducing new PGWP program changes. These aim to align student enrollment and PGWP issuance with labor market needs, reshaping Canada’s approach to hosting nearly one million international students.
