Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long can I stay in Canada as a visitor?

Visitors can usually stay in Canada for up to 6 months, but it depends on the border services officer.

They might allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months and put a date in your passport for when you need to leave.

If you don’t get a stamp, you can stay for 6 months or until your passport expires.

If you need a stamp, ask a border services officer. After you finish at the primary inspection kiosks at the airport, ask the border services officer if you need a stamp in your passport.

To stay longer, apply for an extension at least 30 days before your authorized stay ends.

2. Do I need to apply for both a visitor visa and an ETA?

To travel to Canada, you need either a valid visitor visa or a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), depending on your travel document, country of issuance, nationality, and mode of travel. Answer a few questions to find out which one you need before applying. If you have a valid Canadian visitor visa, you don’t need to apply for an ETA. If you apply for a work or study permit before traveling to Canada and it’s approved, you’ll automatically get a visa or ETA without extra fees.

If you’re issued a visa, it will be placed in your passport.

If you’re issued an ETA, you’ll receive a letter of introduction with the ETA number to contact for any inquiries.

3. My application for a visitor visa was refused. Should I apply again?

If your application for immigration to Canada is refused, applying again with the same information, even with the help of an immigration or travel agent, will not change the decision.

Your application may be denied because the immigration official believes you will stay in Canada beyond your authorized stay or because you’re inadmissible to Canada.

Applying a second time will only cost you more money and increase processing times for other applicants. However, if your situation changes, you may apply again with new information,

such as being approved for criminal rehabilitation, eligible for deemed rehabilitation, inadmissible but applying for a temporary resident permit, or having medical reasons for inadmissibility that have changed. Hiring an immigration representative does not increase your chances of being accepted or change any previous decision on your application. If someone tells you that hiring them will improve your chances, it’s likely a scam.

Learn about how to choose a representative and recognize common immigration scams.

4. I am currently living in or visiting a country that I am not a citizen of. Can I apply for a visitor visa at the local visa office?

To apply for a visa, it’s recommended to apply from your home country if you’re submitting a paper application. However, if you’re legally admitted to the country you’re currently in, you can apply at the nearest visa application centre (VAC), where they can assist in ensuring your application is complete and that all necessary documents are included. On your application, you must explain why you’re not applying in your normal country of residence. You can also apply for a visa online.

5. Whatโ€™s the difference between a visitor visa and a visitor record?

A visitor visa, which is also referred to as a temporary resident visa, is a document required by citizens of certain countries to travel to and enter Canada as a visitor for a period of up to 6 months.

The visitor visa is an official document that we place in your passport to show that you meet the requirements to enter Canada.

It includes the date by which you must arrive in Canada. However, the date is not an expiry date for your stay in Canada.

If you apply for a study or work permit for the first time, you will automatically receive a visitor visa when your application is approved.

A visitor record is a document that can be issued to you by a border services officer if you want to stay in Canada for more than 6 months.

You may also receive a visitor record if your application to extend your stay or restore your status is approved. You need to apply for a visitor record at least 30 days before your authorized stay in Canada expires, either when you arrive or while you are in Canada.

The visitor record is an independent document that includes an expiry date by which you must leave Canada.

6. My application for a permanent resident visa is currently being processed at the Embassy. Can I go to Canada as a tourist and wait for my visa there?

Prior to receiving your permanent resident visa, you are permitted to visit Canada as a tourist. However, until you have obtained your permanent resident visa, we highly advise against making any firm plans for your stay in Canada.

To visit Canada as a tourist, you must apply for a visiting visa.

Please be aware that entrance into Canada is not guaranteed just because you have a valid guest visa. Your ability to enter Canada and how long you can remain will be determined by a border services officer.

7 . I hold a diplomatic or special/service passport. Do I need a visitor visa?

That’s correct! Holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports from visa-required countries may be exempt from paying the processing fee for a visitor visa to Canada if they are travelling on official business. They may still need to apply for a visa, but they should check with the Canadian embassy or consulate in their country to confirm the requirements and procedures for obtaining a visa as a diplomatic, official, or service passport holder.

8. Do I need a Canadian visa if I have a United States visa?

In order to enter or transit through Canada, the majority of passengers require a guest visa or an ETA.

What you require is determined by:

The kind of travel document you’ll use, the nation that issued it, your nationality, and the mode of transportation you’ll use to get to Canada.

Determine your requirements before to applying.

9. I now need an immigration medical exam (IME) to visit Canada. Does this affect my submitted application?

An Immigration Medical Exam (IME) is required for people who are applying to come to Canada temporarily and who lived in a country or territory with a high tuberculosis rate for six months or more. The tuberculosis rate is calculated using data from the World Health Organization.

As of November 23, 2017, people who lived in Singapore, Tunisia, or Fiji for most of the past year (6 months or more) must also complete an IME when they apply to come to Canada for six months or more.

However, people who lived in Argentina, Bahrain, Belize, Colombia, Portugal, the Seychelles, Surinam, or Venezuela no longer have to complete an IME, unless they are specifically asked to do so by Canadian immigration authorities.

If you have already submitted an application before this change,

You will not be penalized if you followed the guidelines that existed at the time your application was received. However,

If you are asked to complete an IME, you must do so.

You can find out if you need to complete an IME by checking the Canadian government’s website or by consulting with a qualified immigration representative.

10. I have not been able to submit an eTA application because of technical issues (i.e. with payment or the application form). Can I still fly to Canada?

No, ETA is a prerequisite for entry. Until your ETA application is approved, you shouldn’t visit Canada.

Within minutes after submitting an ETA application, applicants typically get a confirmation email from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). However, processing some applications can take many days.

Consider rescheduling your flight if you are about to go for Canada.

Verify the email address you entered on your ETA application form’s junk/spam mail folder. Automated emails from the IRCC may be blocked by some spam filters.

Within 72 hours of applying, if you have not received an email confirmation with an application number, you must complete the following web form:

Choose “Electronic Travel Authorization” under “Type of application” before choosing “Case Specific Enquiries”.

Give as many specifics as you can regarding the issue you ran into. Please be aware that we may need a few days to respond to your inquiry.

You must have ETA to enter Canada. Don’t travel until you get it. If you’re leaving soon and haven’t received a decision yet, consider rescheduling your flight. If you try to travel without ETA while your application is being processed, you won’t be allowed to board your flight to Canada.

If you entered Canada without a visa and want to stay for a longer period of time, you must submit an application and pay a fee. This has to be carried out from within Canada. A minimum of 30 days before your status expires, which is typically 6 months from the date you entered Canada, you should file for an extension.

70. I stayed in Canada longer than I was supposed to. How do I restore my status as a visitor?

You may be able to apply to have your visitor status reinstated in particular circumstances if it has been fewer than 90 days after it expired.

Get the forms and papers you require by using your document checklist. Make sure you provide the following information on the Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Visitor Status in Canada (IMM 5708):

Select (Section 3 at the top of the form) Restore my visitor status.

Give specifics about your circumstance and the cause of your overstay in Canada (under section 2 of the background information).

The restoration price is further due.

The acceptance of your application is not guaranteed.

71. Can I change my status to visitor if I need more time to extend my study or work permit?

You can apply to alter your status to tourist, but you won’t be able to apply from within Canada for a new study or work permit once your existing one expires. This implies that you won’t be given further time to renew your study or employment permit.

A study or work permit cannot often be applied for from within Canada for most travellers. You might have to leave Canada to submit an application for a new study or work permit if your status is changed to visitor.

Because of this, if you need additional time to submit your permission application, we highly advise against changing your status to tourist.

Make sure to apply at least 30 days before the expiration of your current permit.
