Canada will reintroduce visa requirements for Mexican nationals, as confirmed by Mexico, potentially leading to similar measures for Canadian visitors. The move aims to address the influx of asylum seekers, according to a senior Canadian official. Mexicans entering Canada now need an electronic travel authorization, utilizing a current U.S. or Canadian visa expired within the past 10 years. Those lacking these qualifications must apply for a Canadian visa, as per Mexico’s foreign ministry.

Quebec Premier Francois Legault recently urged the federal government to act, citing concerns that the absence of visa requirements for Mexicans led to more refugees arriving by plane, straining social services. The response from Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s office is pending. Canada’s decision comes after discussions with two Mexican delegations, with restrictions tailored based on the outcomes instead of a general visa requirement.
