Canada Moves Up Deadline for International Students' Work Permits

Canada has changed its rules for international students seeking work permits after graduation, moving up a crucial deadline.

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced on January 22, 2024, that graduates from college programs under public-private curriculum licensing won’t qualify for post-graduation work permits.

Originally set for September 1, 2024, this rule now starts on May 15, 2024. International students in such programs from May 15 onward won’t get work permits after finishing their studies.

However, graduates can still apply for other work permits, like those backed by an employer’s approved labor market impact assessment, especially for in-demand jobs.

The IRCC has a list of designated learning institutions on its website to check eligibility for post-graduation work permits.
