Canada has recently unveiled an innovative immigration pathway designed to attract skilled tradespeople such as carpenters, plumbers, and welders from various countries, including Nigeria. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the initiative on Tuesday, presenting a streamlined immigration process for skilled workers specializing in carpentry, plumbing, and welding.
The new pathway, integrated into Canada’s Express Entry (EE) system, aims to provide a more efficient and focused route for individuals with expertise in critical trades. By prioritizing the invitation of skilled trades newcomers, Canada seeks to address the growing demand for talent in these fields and to fill vital positions that contribute to the country’s economic growth and development.
According to the IRCC, category-based selection rounds will be conducted throughout the year, in addition to general invitation rounds. More detailed information about these rounds will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
Marc Miller, the Minister of IRCC, stressed the importance of addressing the shortage of skilled trades workers in Canada. He mentioned that part of the solution lies in assisting the construction sector in finding and retaining the necessary workforce. Miller emphasized that recognizing skilled trades workers as essential is a significant step in this direction, expressing anticipation for welcoming more of these talented individuals to Canada.
The new immigration approach aligns with the Canadian government’s broader efforts to rejuvenate its labor force due to its aging population and declining birth rate. Canada’s proactive strategy involves implementing immigration-friendly policies to attract young and vibrant immigrants.
Canada’s Express Entry system, an online platform, serves as the primary means for granting permanent residency to skilled workers. Various pathways exist for professionals and workers to qualify for a Canadian permanent resident visa, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Canadian Experience Class.
In 2022, Canada welcomed 437,120 Permanent Residents, marking an almost eight percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge included a notable growth of 41.9 percent for Nigerian immigrants, with 22,130 individuals arriving in Canada last year compared to 15,595 in the preceding year.
