Canada has set a new rule limiting international student visas to two years, shared by Immigration Minister Marc Miller. The aim is to address what he sees as an unfair system with high international student fees leading to lower-quality education.

This change will mean a 35% reduction in new study visas this year, and certain provinces, especially Ontario, will see even larger drops exceeding 50%.

Starting September 1, students in institutions with a private-public model won’t get postgraduate work permits. Open work permits will be only for spouses of students in master’s, doctoral, and professional programs like medicine and law.

Miller emphasized the federal government’s commitment to working with provinces, understanding that progress might not be as quick as desired.

The focus on immigration to Canada is growing due to concerns about the housing crisis. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre explained, “It’s simple math. If more families come than there’s housing for, it will drive up housing prices.
