Canada Implements Stricter Guidelines for Spousal Open Work Permits

Canada has made it harder to get Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWPs) for partners of international students. Now, only those whose partner is doing a masterโ€™s or doctoral degree in Canada can apply for a SOWP, starting March 19.

Earlier, on January 22, Canada changed its rules for international students. Spouses of undergraduates or college students can no longer get SOWPs.

But, there are exceptions. Spouses of undergraduates in certain professional programs can still apply for a SOWP. These programs include dentistry, law, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, education, and engineering.
