Canada’s decision to limit international student visas, reducing permits by 35%, has sparked varying opinions. The goal is to tackle the housing crisis in the country.

While some believe the changes will help with housing, others criticize them. Akshay Chaturvedi, CEO of Leverage Edu, said, “The limits suggested donโ€™t solve the housing crisis or address the employment-matching problem.” Chaturvedi added, “I see this as a political decision rather than a structured-for-economy one.”

Pranav Pande, a student recruitment advisor for the University of Windsor, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that rapid policy changes might be influenced by an unstable government seeking to please the masses. Additionally, to address the housing crisis, the immigration office now requires an attestation letter from the provincial government attached to the study permit, but there’s a lack of proper infrastructure for provinces to issue these letters.
