In an effort to fulfill its promise to reduce net migration, the UK government, led by Rishi Sunak, has implemented stricter visa norms. The new regulations raise the salary threshold for skilled worker visas from ยฃ26,000 to ยฃ38,700, effectively restricting access for those earning below the specified salary.

Home Secretary James Cleverly announced the changes in the House of Commons on Monday, stating the government’s aim to reduce net annual immigration by 300,000 in the coming years. Additionally, the new measures include barring overseas care workers from bringing family members and eliminating the 20% salary discount for employers hiring workers on the shortage occupation list.

These measures align with the Conservative Party’s pledge to address immigration concerns ahead of the upcoming general election. The government believes that by raising the salary requirement and restricting family visas for certain workers, it can better manage migration levels.
