Austria is set to unveil its new and more secure passport in December, aiming to make it one of the world’s most modern and protected. Starting December 1, 2023, Austrians can apply for the upgraded passport at nearly 900 locations across the country.

The redesign prioritizes identity protection and anti-forgery measures, featuring a new plastic data page with a QR code. This QR code, familiar from the country’s identity card, allows for easy electronic verification using the Ministry of the Interior’s free “CHECK-AT” app.

The new passport comes with no additional fees for citizens. Currently, the passport fee in Austria is โ‚ฌ75.90 for adults, โ‚ฌ30 for children up to twelve years old, and free for children up to two years old. Previously issued passports will remain valid until their expiration date.

The Austrian government, in collaboration with experts, has been working on this new passport since 2020, emphasizing enhanced security and modern design.
