More students are being turned down for visas in Australia because some schools are changing their offers due to new rules. About 1 in 5 international students had their visa applications rejected in the last two quarters of 2023.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the rejection of visa applications for thousands of overseas students has led to a 20% drop in student visa approvals, the biggest change in two decades. This decrease in the education program contributes to an overall decrease in migrant intake to 375,000 this financial year, with expectations of a further drop to 250,000 next year.

Countries like India, Nepal, and Pakistan, ranking as Australia’s second, third, and ninth source markets, are notably affected by these changes. Australia’s recent migration strategy has caused confusion and disruption in the international education sector, especially impacting potential students from key sending markets. The current strategy has resulted in more visa rejections, longer processing times, and instances of revoked offers from Australian institutions, creating challenges for international students.
